Who Uses DAWN?—Communities and the Private Sector

The New DAWN is “an incredible new tool that …sheds light on drug abuse problems, including the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications.”

—Florida epidemiologist

New DAWN focuses particular attention on drug use as a local public health problem.

For example, DAWN monitors ED visits associated with:
  • Underage drinking;

  • Adverse reactions to new medications;

  • Accidental poisonings of young children; and

  • Misuse of prescription drugs.

Communities use DAWN to:
  • Detect emerging drug problems

  • Support grant applications for treatment and prevention services;

  • Assess the need for public health resources.

For example, one public health department on the West Coast used DAWN to assess the link between methamphetamine and a recent increase in syphilis.

Pharmaceutical firms use DAWN data to track the use, misuse, and abuse of their products. The FDA encourages pharmaceutical firms to consider DAWN in their post-marketing surveillance strategies.
