New DAWN focuses particular attention on drug use
as a local public health problem.
For example, DAWN monitors ED visits associated with:
- Underage drinking;
- Adverse reactions to new medications;
- Accidental poisonings of young children; and
- Misuse of prescription drugs.
Communities use DAWN to:
- Detect emerging drug problems
- Support grant applications for treatment and prevention
services;
- Assess the need for public health resources.
For example, one public health department on the West Coast
used DAWN to assess the link between methamphetamine and a
recent increase in syphilis.
Pharmaceutical firms use DAWN data to track the use,
misuse, and abuse of their products. The FDA encourages pharmaceutical
firms to consider DAWN in their post-marketing surveillance
strategies. |
