Who Uses DAWN?—Members of the Network: Hospital Emergency Department (EDs) and Medical Examiners/Coroners (ME/Cs)

DAWN can help us demonstrate the need for detox services here. Now, we send all our detox patients to the ICU. That costs a lot of money.

—ED staff from New Orleans

DAWN provides member hospitals and ME/Cs immediate access to their own data through DAWN LIVE!, a secure Internet-based query system.

EDs and ME/Cs use their DAWN data to:
  • Educate the community and work with public health authorities to address problems related to the use, misuse, and abuse of drugs;

  • Monitor drug-related cases seen in their facilities, recognize sentinel events, and train staff to respond to such cases; and

  • Manage resources and staffing to respond to changing caseloads.
