Building the Network

In the late 1990s, DAWN helped us identify GHB, a body-building drug that brought more than 70 youth to our ED. Because of DAWN, we were able to educate our staff, provide better treatment for our patients, and report the problem to the FDA.

DAWN’s purpose is to measure the morbidity and mortality of drug use, misuse, and abuse. DAWN relies on its members—hospital emergency departments (EDs) and medical examiners and coroners (ME/Cs)—to report on drug-related ED visits and deaths.

The participation of each facility is important to DAWN.

Read more about why EDs and ME/Cs join DAWN.
